My Name is Joey Lee Whittaker.

I grew up in a family where I suffered a lot of physical and emotional abuse. I started drinking at the age of 7 as soon as I took that first drink all my fear seemed to leave me. At the age of 11 I was taken away and placed in foster homes due to my alcohol and drug use. I was in and out of jails and prison till the age of 32 all of this time I was stuck in my addiction.

In 2008 I was sent to treatment at Willamette Family Carlton House. This was the first time I was ever offered treatment for my drug addiction. In 2009 I found Jiu-jitsu and trained under Professor Ryan Clark owner of Clark’s University of Martial Arts. I received my Purple Belt from Professor Ryan Kelly at Northwest Martial Arts. Most recently I trained under Professor Ben Baxter at Performance Martial Arts.

I have been working as a Substance Abuse Counselor since 2011 and currently work for Yamhill County Adult Behavioral Health and have my CADC 2 and am a QMHA. I attend Marylhurst University working in my Masters degree in Social Work. I am a single father of a 6 year old little girl. My goal is to assure that any child that wants to find something positive to do has the opportunity to find Martial Arts through Checkered Past MMA.

My name is Derek Luna, I am 23, a local professional fighter, Father.

Disciplines: Boxing, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu.

I have been clean for 3 years. I’ve fought with drugs and alcohol for 7 years. In affiliated with CPMMA because Jimmy and I have a lot in common. I also want to help make a difference with our youth. There are too many kids getting into drugs and or alcohol and kids choosing to be rebellious and run the streets. I say this because I used to be just like that and do all those things. Always in trouble and doing drugs.

My name is Ian King. I am a 7-3 amateur Featherweight.

Disciplines: Wrestling, Judo, BJJ, Muay Thai.

I was born in Roseburg, OR and grew up in the surrounding rural areas, I first became interested in martial arts when I started wrestling at high-school age. I wrestled at Myrtle Point 05-06 season, before moving back to Roseburg proper, and wrestled at Roseburg High for the 07-08 season, during which a friend showed me a video of Randy Couture fighting Tim Sylvia. I saw the fight, and knowing that I wouldn’t be wrestling in college it stuck in my mind. One year later in 2009, I joined a Judo and MMA club and began training, with the goal of competing in mma. I had my first fight in 2011, and over the next 5 years I have compiled a 7-3 amateur record, competing in 3 different weight classes. I have finished my opponent in 6 of my 7 victories, 5 times by submission and 1 time by TKO. 5 of those finishes coming in the first round. I now live in Portland, Oregon, and study BJJ, and MMA under professor Fabiano Scherner, and his excellent coaching staff. I train Muay Thai out of Burke Camp, under Ajarn Dan Burke.

I support Checkered Past MMA Outreach because I think that Jimmy Jennett is a guy who has excellent moral character, and chooses to spend his time and money on exposing children to martial arts, and imparting good values like staying out of drugs, out of trouble with the law, and standing up for others. Jimmy is a guy who isn’t afraid to use his own past mistakes, and human imperfections to try to guide kids down a smoother path than his own has been, and I’m with that 100%.
