Jimmy Jennett
Founder & Executive Director

My name is Jimmy Jennett. I am a professional MMA Fighter and the Founder of Checkered Past MMA Outreach.

First off, I want to welcome everyone to Checkered Past and say I hope our outreach mission becomes less synonymous with me, personally, and more about community ownership and proud representation of our core value: helping at-risk youth develop constructive values and solid principles. One of our hallmarks is carrying a drug prevention message to the next generation. I personally fight for this and carry a clean and sober message into the octagon.

Our outreach seeks to empower kids in tough situations to speak out, weather the storm like a boxing match, and get out! We advocate for people in dangerous domestic violence, bullying, suicidal and substance or alcohol situations and offer many resources to anyone facing these struggles right here on this website. The bottom line is we care.

Personally, I was a promising young man growing up in a dysfunctional home. I made some bad decisions in my youth that resulted in becoming a very willful and bad young man. I’m on my ninth life and praise God I’ve seen the light. I truly believe I’m here to give back what’s been freely given to me and that’s what I’m committed to do. I’m an advocate for health, good decision making and keeping good company. I truly believe we’re here to help one another and raise the kids up right! If everyone incorporated these beliefs and effort into their lives, the world would improve exponentially.

In closing, thank you for your interest and support of Checkered Past MMA Outreach.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Jennett

Jon

My name is Jon Roberts and I have spent over twenty years in active addiction and criminality where violence was the law. I’ve spent 15 years of my life incarcerated where violence was the law. I got clean and sober January 4th 2007 and have remained clean and sober to this day. After 2 years working on de-institutionalizing myself I decided to go back to school and see what I could make of what was left of my life. I became a certified drug and alcohol counselor because I wanted to give back to the people, the ones who took a risk on me when no one else would, the ones who still suffer from addictions. I wanted to see if I could make a small difference in the world.

Along my journey I was fortunate enough to find a few likeminded people who also wanted to make a difference and we started a nonprofit that offers peer to peer recovery services in the Lane County area.

In 2011, I met Jimmy Jennett and he told me some of his vision. I was immediately touched by the idea of CPMMA and the message he wanted to share with the youth in an effort to prevent kids from having to tell a similar story to mine or worse. In 2016 I was asked to support Jimmy in helping to create a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit and was nominated to be on the board of directors and gratefully accepted. I am honored and excited to be a part of such an amazing group of people and to support this amazing vision.

Savannah

Like many people in our community, my family has been affected by addiction for many generations. So as a child I was exposed to domestic violence, drugs, parents being incarcerated, and other things that make it hard to make positive choices in day to day life. I was lucky enough to have other family members who supported me at very pivotal moments, and showed me that there is a healthy and positive way to live life. Not everyone has that support network that they can reach out to in that way.  I honestly feel that if I did not have that support, I would have made some very bad choices and just continued the cycle of addiction. We have to break the Cycle of addiction by supporting the youth in our community and each other.

That is what Checkered Past MMA Outreach is all about, getting that support message to youth so they can reach their full potential.  I am very happy to be part of such a big hearted group that does so much for the youth in our community.

Kim
Hello, my name is Kimalyn Brown. Many years of my life were spent in a state of constant self-destruction through the use of drugs, alcohol and other unhealthy behaviors. Looking back on those years now, I can’t help but wonder what my life could have looked like had there been something or someone out there that could have provided something different.

I believe that the Checkered Past vision will provide that something different for those young people out there about to walk the same path as I once did. These days, I am more than grateful for my journey, which has brought me full circle. I currently hold the positions of Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor I and Qualified Mental Health Associate at Whitebird Clinic/Chrysalis Behavioral Health Program. As a recovering Human Being myself, I feel grateful about giving back the gifts that I have been given, in this way.

I also look forward to furthering my career in the field with a degree in psychology, which I am currently working toward.  Learning from my own life experiences, along with formal education in mental health and recovery, is why I am so passionate about prevention. If I can be a part of something that helps even one young person to take a road that leads him/her away from self-destruction, then life is good. The young people are the future of this world. The vision of Checkered Past provides hope for that future.
